The basement workshop unfurled like a second mind: cold stone married to alien alloy, cabling run in branching veins along the walls. This one sat beneath an old warehouse outside Reykjavik. It was not the only one.
Steam lifted from the enamel mug in Kyrion’s hand, torn away by the coastal gale as quickly as it rose. From the warehouse rooftop, he watched the Reykjavik harbor basin, where the horizon dissolved into driven snow and gray sea light. Below, the crunch of tires broke the winter hush. A black 1971 Chevrolet Impala coasted to the curb, its low-slung chassis and oxidized chrome accents marking it as a relic of another era, pale exhaust drifting into the frost.
The woman slipped past him into the entry hall. The interior was not the sterile, high-tech safehouse she might have anticipated; it bore the order of a lived-in home. A long timber counter divided the main room, stools tucked neatly underneath, textbooks stacked in uneven towers at one end. The warmth of use clashed with the image she had carried of him for decades.
