The ward had settled into its night rhythm. Lights low, monitors tracing quiet signatures across the glass partitions. Kai lay motionless in a private observation room at Harborview Medical Center. He had arrived under emergency transfer, his rare cardiovascular anomaly flagged for treatment by a specialized unit that existed only here, at least on record.
In the Harborview ICU, a localized pressure distortion flexed the observation window as ambient light fractured around the bed.
By the time Laila was allowed into the room, Harborview’s systems had absorbed the new narrative. Kai lay beneath the familiar ICU lights, his records amended and his discharge calibrated to a recovery that bordered on the impossible. During the brief interval before the family entered, Vega completed the deception. She spoke to Laila and Atlas by phone, called it a miracle, then supplied the ordinary cautions and postoperative instructions expected after major cardiac surgery.
