The host crackled through the speakers, calm and thoughtful. Kai slowed at a red light blocks from his apartment, peering through the streaked glass. The city’s haze veiled the stars, but he pictured them anyway, steadfast sentinels beyond the clouds.

Dinner was done, and the last dishes clinked as Laila rinsed them clean. Lemon zest and cumin still warmed the kitchen, the trace of Kai’s cooking. Chickpeas, roasted golden, were his signature when he felt energetic enough to spoil her. The house had settled into its evening shape, soft and cozy, uniquely theirs.

Ramirez keyed the mic. “This is Ramirez to Dispatch. Requesting immediate armed backup to 4527 Willow Lane. Suspected active hostage situation at Ambassador Carson’s residence. Code three! Move now!”
