Atlas’s Apartment, Bellingham — Late Evening
The door clicked shut behind Kai, the latch swallowed by the worn carpet of Atlas’s student apartment. The air greeted him in layers: coffee gone cold, the salt of leftover takeout, and beneath it the less nameable scent of a life still settling into its corners. Grocery bags rustled as he set them on the counter. The room came up out of the dark. A desk lamp threw its light unevenly, giving the room its restless energy.
Kai stood a moment, taking in the small apartment. On the side table, a copy of Kaku’s Hyperspace lay open and face-down, a fresh crease running its spine.
“Hey, babe.” The warmth in her greeting carried the abrasion of a long day. “I’m at Atlas’s place. Figured someone should make sure he eats real food once in a while.”
Atlas rolled his eyes. “She’s reorganizing my kitchen like it’s a military base.”
